From Civil to Sacred: A Hidden Chapter in My Family’s Past

Hola Primos,

I am continually delving into our family history, as new records are constantly being added to various online repositories. Today, I came across a fascinating marriage record for my grandparents, affectionately known as Papito and Mama, Etanislao Resto and Rafaela Mijon. What is particularly intriguing is their decision to have a church wedding, even though they had already been legally married in a Civil Ceremony on September 13, 1915, in Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Here are the details from the record:

Etanislao Resto Y Lopez, age 31, and single.
Father: Eloy Resto
Mother: Carmen Lopez

They were married on July 20, 1928, in Los Tres Santos Reyes Parish, Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico.

Rafaela Mijon Y Rivera, age 32, and single.
Father: Guadalupe Mijon
Mother: Juana Rivera
Witnesses to the ceremony were Juan Ramos and Belen Ramos.

Tio Guiso and Tio Bartolo were both baptized in the same parish.

Antonio Luis Resto Y Mijon – Baptism: May 25, 1929, Los Tres Santos Reyes, Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico. Godparents: Juan Osorio and Juaquina Osorio.

Bartolo Resto Y Mijon – Baptism: September 13, 1930, Los Tres Santos Reyes, Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico. Godparents: Juan Ramos and Belen Ramos were also witnesses at Papito and Mama’s church wedding. I wonder if they are related to us?

Until Next Time,

Lilly Resto Gunderman
